Kimberly Trowbridge
Hello Sentient Beings!
I am Kimberly Trowbridge, a visual artist and educator.
I seek to engage my community in the process of perceptual inquiry and awareness. I believe the language of color and shape can open pathways of empathy with our natural surroundings. I also believe the process of painting creates personal agency— a means for witnessing and responding to experience and, ultimately, for contributing new forms of reality.
I am the Director of the Modern Color Atelier, through Gage Academy of Art, and have been part of the Equinox community now for nearly 8 years. Our studio at Equinox continues to be a meaningful hub for my current students and alumni community; I curate monthly exhibitions in the hallway gallery of The Factory building.
I am particularly inspired by the colors and forms found in nature. Field painting is integral to my creative process and is how I ground myself and initiate a relationship specific to place. I spend time working in different environments to experience how different palettes, shifts in scale, and natural forms reveal new insights and patterns of thought. I filter these messages through my body, and the figurative forms in my paintings narrate this transformative experience.

1. Kimberly Field Painting, Image by David Benhaim.
2. Hemlock in the Moss Garden, Oil on Canvas, 60" x 72", 2024. Currently on view in Silva Cascadia group show at Museum of Northwest Art.
3. Frieze of Sculptures, Plaster, based on figures from Poussin's painting "Empire of Flora." I love breaking down form into essentialized shapes, like letters in an alphabet.
4. Triadic Figure in Interior, Oil on Paper on Panel, 16" x 20", 2023. In the Modern Color Atelier I teach the method of Color-Blocking, where each shape of color is analyzed in terms of Value, Temperature, and degree of Intensity. Creating a confident, poetic relationship with color is liberating.
