There is a simple joy that we get from seeing and using objects we love. We are tactile and visual creatures, and instinctually design matters to us. For instance, that small moment of pleasure when you realise your favourite coffee cup is clean for your morning coffee? Well that moment is my motivation… be it functional or sculptural – I’m after your small smile.

Trained in Product Design at Parson’s School of Design, my work is shaped by this, and the places I’ve been lucky enough to live; London, Paris, Singapore, Tokyo, New York, Melbourne and now, I’m absorbing the colour of the Pacific Northwest.

Tactility?  That’s my bag.  I want everything I make to feel good –for a cup to have such a surface and curves that you don’t want to put down.

Aesthetics? I leave most of that up to the clay, my role is as a medium – or midwife.  I’m not designing, I’m simply facilitating the movement of the clay – supporting where it wants to go.  And so, with the nature of slip, glaze and plaster as my guide – I make work.  The natural weight of plaster swells & deepens to shape my forms when I’m making a model.  The juicy drips of glaze on the outside of a form are kept as the glaze was applied. The splash and splatters and in my work come from letting go not directing or dictating the material’s course by painting it on but playing with different ways of leading the slip to land in the mold.

I’m not in charge, I just work here, and I love it.
